When every second counts, the ability of the medical team to effectively manage the patient's airway can be crucial to saving a life. Sound practical skills in airway management are indispensable for emergency medicine, anaesthetists and intensive care specialists, having a direct impact on patient health in critical and emergency situations such as cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.
During March 27-29, 2024, in the premises of CUSIM, the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation from the Republic of Moldova, organized a training course for trainers on Advanced Airway Management. The representatives of the "Gheorghe Ciobanu" university departments of emergency medicine, anesthesiology and reanimation no. 1 "Valeriu Ghereg", anesthesiology and reanimatology no. 2 affiliated to the university clinics of the Institute of Emergency Medicine, the Republican Clinical Hospital "Timofei Moșneaga", the Oncological Institute of the Republic of Moldova, the Municipal Clinical Hospital "Gheorghe Paladi".
The course structure incorporated pre-reading materials and lectures, video-assisted learning, hands-on skills workshops and high-fidelity simulation sessions Under the guidance of facilitators from Romania and Ireland, certified by the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care in conjunction with The European Society for Applied Simulation in Medicine, 20 teaching staff strengthened their knowledge in advanced airway management techniques in elective and urgent cases in various other clinical environments (emergency room, operating room, intensive care). In the same way, the participants familiarized themselves with and practiced the modern methods of simulation training: (phases of simulation induction, crisis management principles, training without prejudice, psychological safety in simulation training, techniques and ways of debriefing, providing feedback constructive post simulation).
The Advanced Airway Management training of trainers course was aimed at strengthening the capacities of university departments and strengthening the standards of training, care and patient safety. Participants showed great interest in this educational course, commitment to its dissemination. Beneficiaries expressed their satisfaction for excellent organization, exceptional course, extraordinary experience, maximum usefulness.
