Over the past year, WFSA has been leading innovative work in the field of PBM. A landmark event took place in October 2022, when our member societies in Latin America signed the Santa Cruz Declaration. The declaration emphasizes the debilitating impact of iron deficiency, anemia, bleeding and coagulation disorders both on national public health services and on the communities they serve. In response, the signatories of the declaration call for the implementation of the principles of perioperative patient blood management, by those its three fundamental pillars:           

-Detection and management of anemia and iron deficiency
- Minimizing blood loss and optimizing coagulation
-Improving and optimizing the physiological tolerance to anemia
The declaration calls on stakeholders, including professional bodies and national governments, to create and implement a standardized, sustainable, systematic, multidisciplinary and multiprofessional policy aimed at preserving the patient's own blood.
